Dress Code for 2009 - 2010

STANDARDS OF DRESS

Purpose

A student's dress and general appearance should not be such that it draws undesirable attention to the student, nor should dress and appearance detract or interfere with teaching and learning in the classroom and on the campus. It is expected that all students shall maintain their personal appearance and clothing in a modest, clean and age-appropriate fashion consistent with our dress code and compatible with the instructional program.

Standards

The District has determined that certain gangs (also known as criminal gangs or street gangs) are operating in and around Pasadena. In light of this fact, the Board of Education has also determined that the wearing of gang-related clothing on school premises, or during school-sponsored activities threatens the health and safety of the students and impairs the school environment accordingly.

Students may not wear, possess, use, distribute, or display any clothing, color, jewelry, emblem, badge, symbol, colored bandana, or sash which represents or evidences membership or affiliation with any gang or promotes gang-related activity.

Clothing, backpacks and other accessories which have been deemed through collaboration between Pasadena Unified School District and local law enforcement or other experts to be gang related is prohibited. Specifically the items of clothing which are prohibited are: Red, blue, or black cloth belts with or without punched out buckles; red or blue shoe laces; any sports related apparel that is known to reference gang association (Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburg Pirates, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Angels, Boston Red Sox, UCLA Bruins, Oakland Raiders), Mongolian hair cuts (mostly shaved head with hair only at top or back of head and/or top knot); notched eyebrows indicating 13 or 14, clothing, hairstyles, or accessories including any gang symbols or initials including, but not limited to; N, S, Sur(Sureno), Norte(Norteno), Sureno, Norteno, Blood, Crip, PDL, PJG, ABC. RAC, ADL, SLG, HFL, MS, VBP, KB, VPR, PLK, ESP, NSP, SSP, TLS, Lanes, Projecks, Projeck Misses, Altadena Bloc, Raymonds, Squiggly, Lady Hustlers, Mara Salvatrucha, Villa Boys(z), Krazy Boys(z), Malos, Varrio Pasadena Rifa, Latin Kings, East Side, North Side, South Side, Tiny Locos; hair nets, bandanas, doo-rags, or shower caps. The District also prohibits excessive use of the color red, blue, or black in clothing or accessories worn by students that reasonably suggest gang affiliation.

Upon consultation with local law enforcement agencies, or other experts, additional rules which restrict gang-associated dress may be instituted by the school principal with notification to students and parents. The school principal may institute additional rules which restrict gang-associated dress without prior notice, provided compelling circumstances require such action to be taken and notification is subsequently sent to students and parents within a reasonable time period.

Approved hats may be purchased from the Student Store. Any other headgear (e.g. headbands, visors, bandanas, ski caps, nets, combs in the hair, wave caps, etc.) are not allowed at school unless necessary pursuant to a documented medical condition and with approval from the principal or designee. All confiscated hats or headgear will not be returned until the end of the semester.

Baggy and oversized pants are not allowed. Pants must fit at the waist so they do not sag and no undergarments are exposed.

Pajama style clothing may not be worn at school.

Unacceptable dresses and tops: sleeveless undershirts, strapless, spaghetti straps, off the shoulder cut-out designs and sun dresses, low-cut or tight shirts blouses or tops that bare. the midriff at any time, bare-back, tube tops, male-type athletic tank tops, mesh tops and see ¬through or sheer clothing that does not have an appropriate blouse or shirt underneath.

Hemlines and slits on dresses, skirts and shorts are not to be shorter than mid-thigh. Gym shorts are permitted only in physical education classes. No bathing or swimsuits. Clothing and accessories which are unsafe and/or dangerous (e g. safety pins, wrist band studs, studded belts, collars, all metal belts, handcuffs, etc.) are not allowed.

All clothing must be in good repair. No cutoffs allowed. Tears holes, and slits in the seams are not permitted.

Clothing backpacks, and other accessories (i.e. long hanging net belts) that indicate affiliation with or admiration of negative social influences such as gangs, substance abuse, inappropriate language, and obscene or offensive messages will not be permitted.

Consequences

Students who appear at school wearing inappropriate clothing or who are inappropriately groomed will not be allowed to attend class until they make the necessary changes to meet dress and grooming requirements. Changes could entail removing objectionable clothing items or contacting parents/guardians to return home to obtain appropriate clothing.

A violation of the standards may include a warning, making arrangements for a change of attire/detention, parent conference, or off campus suspension, depending on the number and severity of the infractions.
